Accessibility
Floppaland should be easy to read and use for everyone. This page lists what the website does for accessibility today, and what is still missing.
Read aloud
Pages with text (patch notes, the wiki, game mode pages, the home page and more) have a Listen button under the title. It reads the main text of the page out loud, without the menu and the footer, and marks the part it is reading.
- It speaks in the language of the page and picks a matching voice on your device. The website comes in 20 languages, and the button works in all of them.
- Pause, resume and stop at any time. Esc stops reading too.
- It uses the speech built into your browser and device, so nothing is sent anywhere and nothing needs to be installed. Which voices you hear depends on your device. If there is no voice for a language, the button tells you, and your browser may read with another voice.
- If your browser can't speak at all, the button is not shown.
Keyboard
- The first Tab on every page shows a Skip to content link that jumps past the menu.
- Links, buttons and menus can be reached with Tab and used with Enter or Space. The phone menu (☰) and the display options close with Esc.
- Whatever has keyboard focus gets a clear yellow outline.
Screen readers
- Every page has its language set, so screen readers use the right pronunciation.
- Pages are built from a menu, one main area with headings, and a footer, so screen readers can jump between them.
- Every picture and screenshot has a text description (alt text).
- Icon-only buttons have a name for screen readers.
Display options
The round Aa button in the bottom right corner opens the display options. Your choice is remembered in your browser only.
- High contrast: plain white text on black, with outlined buttons and underlined links.
- Reduce effects: turns off animations, moving backgrounds and other motion. It switches on by itself when your device is set to reduce motion.
What is not perfect yet
- The browser games and tools (like the fishing game and the character designer) are made for mouse and touch first and are not fully usable with a keyboard or a screen reader yet.
- Video clips have no captions or audio description yet.
- Some newer pages are only in English for now.
