V0.9992 #11: Retro mode, a better slide and lots of polish
Retro mode now shows the whole game, menus included, like an old console, and asks Modern or Retro the first time you play. The Secret Palace Slide gets a slalom, speed pads and a livelier Skidsy. Falling, water, signs and enemies get new effects and sounds, and Bramble Hill Fort gets a rebuilt waterfall and a farm field.
What's in this build
- Retro mode, reworked: the 3D picture at 264p (the N64's 240p plus 10%), the HUD and menus at 540p, in 4:3 with black bars or stretched to fill. An optional fewer-colours filter, off by default.
- The first time you start Floppa Odyssey it asks: Modern Mode or Retro Mode? Point at an option to preview it. You can change it any time in Settings › Game mode settings.
- New Game mode settings: Player Outline (a dark outline round your character) and Show Control Hints (off by default). F1 only opens the console now.
- Secret Palace Slide: the fork, where you could fall between the branches, is now a slalom through ice blocks and bumpers. Speed pads fling you forward, the chute walls are higher, and skipping ahead through the air no longer counts for the clock or the race.
- Skidsy the penguin breathes, looks around, wobbles down the chute and waddles. He always finishes the race, congratulates you when you win and warps home with a sparkle.
- Sliding sounds like one smooth swoosh that follows your speed, and your feet stay on top of the ice.
- Falling off works like a classic 3D platformer: the camera watches you drop, a circle closes in on you, coins tumble out of the counter and the circle opens again on safe ground.
- Water: splash sounds and spray when you jump in or out, calmer swimming sounds, and no more grass growing under water.
- Signs and characters type out what they say with a little voice, and the text box is bigger.
- Enemies make hit and defeat sounds that match what they are made of. Grumble-pots are now acorns in green worlds and rocks in caves, mountains and the sky.
- Cutscenes freeze the world: the player, enemies, platforms and timers wait until they end.
- World coins have their own shape in every world: a crown, a leaf, a scallop shell, a lily and a snowflake.
- Bramble Hill Fort: the waterfall is one smooth sheet now, the stream on the cliff joins Spring Lake, green hills with trees surround the map behind an invisible edge, the farm has a real field with wheat, cabbages, pumpkins and a scarecrow, and hay bales are round bales.
- Fixed: the windmill shrimp in Bramble Hill Fort sat inside the roof, windmill roofs had no collision, wood and brick textures slid on moving platforms, tree shadows flickered, and the drums in Bouncy Bluffs played the wrong sound.
- Main menu: a tidier bottom-right corner with links to Patreon, the website and the Epic Games Store.
